Section and block reference

Last checked against Splash 1.0.0 / 2026-08-15

Every section the theme editor can show you, grouped by where it lives. For each one: where it can be placed, whether it has a preset, its settings with their defaults, its blocks with their limits, and what it does when you leave things empty.

How to read an entry

Placement

Where Shopify will let you put the section. Some are locked to one template or one section group.

Preset

Whether the section appears in the editor's Add section list. A section with no preset can only exist where the theme already placed it. Remove it and there is no way to add it back from the editor.

Blocks

What you can add inside the section, and how many. A section-wide maximum caps the total across all block types. A per-block limit caps one type on its own.

Empty state

What a shopper sees when a setting is blank. Several sections vanish entirely on the storefront while staying visible in the editor, so you can keep working on them.

Defaults listed here are what a fresh install carries. The demo home page you inherit is already filled in with example content, which is a separate matter. See Replace the demo content.

Sections you cannot add back

These have no preset. They are placed by the theme, and the editor's Add section list will not offer them. If you delete one, restoring it means editing the theme code or reinstalling the theme.

Section Where it lives What it does
Announcement bar Header group The ribbon above the header. Hide it with the eye icon rather than deleting it.
Header Header group Logo, navigation, search, cart.
Footer Footer group Menu, brand column, newsletter, regional settings.
Cart drawer Every page, placed by the layout The side cart. It cannot be moved or removed, and it has no settings of its own.
Quick view Footer group The dialog that opens from a product card. No settings.
Product recommendations Product template Two of them ship, one related and one complementary.
Predictive search Never shown in the editor Draws the live results inside the header search panel.

Each template's own main section also has no preset: Product, Collection, Search, Cart, Blog, Article, Page, Not found, Password and Collections grid. Those are the template, not an addition to it.

Header group

The header group sits above every page. Both sections in it pin to the top of the window as the shopper scrolls, and they stack: the announcement bar pins first, the header pins below it.

Announcement bar

Placement: header group only. Preset: none. Blocks: up to 12 Announcement blocks.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Scroll the messagesOnly when they do not fitThree choices: only when they do not fit, always, never. On the default setting a desktop bar with short copy stands still and a phone bar travels.
Scrolling speed45Pixels per second, 15 to 150 in steps of 5.
Bar backgroundemptyLeave empty to use the band colors from Theme settings.
Message textemptySame fallback.
IconsemptySame fallback.
Text size12px10 to 18px.
UppercaseoffSets the messages in capitals.
Bar height34px28 to 72px. Raising it pushes the pinned header down with it.
Space between messages18px8 to 64px. Also sets the space each side of the separator dot.

Announcement block carries a Message, a Figure (shown after the message in the monospace data face, for a value such as 10 yr), an Icon from a list of twelve, an optional Link, a Placement, and a Show on control for all devices, desktop only, or mobile only. Mobile means narrower than 750px.

Placement has two values. Scrolling messages, left is the run that travels. Pinned links, right is a fixed group that is hidden below 1040px, where the navigation becomes a drawer. Anything a shopper must be able to reach on a phone belongs on the left.

Limit The bar has no pause or close control. Setting Scroll the messages to Never is how you stop it. Customers whose device requests reduced motion never see it move.

Full detail in Announcement bar, footer and cart.

Placement: header group. Preset: none. Blocks: up to 12 Mega menu blocks.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Menumain-menuThe main navigation.
Customer account menucustomer-account-main-menuShown to a signed-in customer.
HeadingPopular searchesSits above the shortcut list in the search panel.
Popular searches menuemptyA link list shown under the search field until the shopper types. Point its items at search results, such as /search?q=pool+pumps, or at collections.

There is no setting that turns a menu item into a mega menu. Menu depth decides it: a top-level item whose submenu has a submenu of its own opens as columns, and a two-level item opens as a simple list. You build that in Navigation.

Mega menu block exists to add what a link list cannot carry. It takes the Menu item name spelled exactly as it appears in your menu, a Layout (Automatic, Columns, Simple list), Show product counts (on by default, counting real products in each linked collection), and five fields for an optional featured panel: Caption, Heading, Text, Link label, Link. The panel appears once you enter a heading.

Note A mega menu block whose Menu item does not match a top-level menu item does nothing at all. See Navigation and mega menus.

Home page sections

All six carry presets, so you can add, remove and reorder them freely, and add them to other templates too. The order the theme ships is Masthead, Collection index, Featured products, Testimonials, Quote request, Certifications.

Masthead

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes, with no blocks. Blocks: up to 4 Highlight blocks.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
CaptionemptyA short line above the heading, set in capitals beside the tick mark.
HeadingemptyLeave blank to use your store name.
TaglineemptyOne or two supporting lines.
Desktop imageemptyFills the screen under the header. 2560 x 1440px recommended, composed with a dark left half.
Phone imageemptyUsed below 750px. Portrait, 1200 x 2100px recommended. Leave blank and phones get no hero photograph, only type on a dark band.
Tablet imageemptyUsed on upright tablets. 4:5 portrait, 1600 x 2000px recommended. Leave blank to reuse the phone image.
Button labelemptyThe filled primary button.
Button linkemptyBoth label and link are needed before the button appears.
Secondary button labelemptyThe outlined button beside it.
Secondary button linkemptyBoth are needed here too.

Highlight block takes a Heading, a Text line and an Icon from the same set of twelve the announcement bar uses. Four highlights draw as a row across the foot of the hero. A block with no heading is skipped.

Empty state: with no Desktop image the section draws a dashed panel naming the subject and the pixel size it wants. That panel is visible to shoppers, not only in the editor. The highlights row is hidden on phones and upright tablets whenever a phone or tablet image is set, because the type sits on the photograph there.

Note The heading is set in white directly on the photograph with no tint behind it. A photograph with a bright left half makes it unreadable and no setting can fix that. See Set up the home page.

Collection index

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes, with no blocks. Blocks: up to 8 Collection blocks.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
CaptionemptyShort line above the heading.
HeadingShop by categoryHidden when blank.
IntroemptyOne line under the heading.
Show “All categories” linkonThe link beside the heading.
“All categories” linkemptyWhere it goes. Empty sends shoppers to the store's full collection list.
Show category imagesoffOff gives a compact ruled directory. On fills each tile with the collection's image and sets the name on it.
Show product countoffShows the count next to any data hint. The count always shows on tiles that have no hint.
Collections to show62 to 8. Applies only when no Collection blocks are added.
Mobile layoutSwipeSwipe or Stacked. Only shown in the editor while category images are on.
Columns on mobile21 or 2. Only shown while images are off, or while the mobile layout is Stacked.
Columns on desktop33 or 4.

Collection block takes a Collection, then four optional overrides: Title, Image, Link, and a two-part data hint of Hint label and Hint value.

The hint replaces the product count on that tile. Keep the value short: the tile gives that line about 13 characters on the narrowest phones and 18 on a typical one, and the label is dropped automatically on tiles under 176px wide. Write a value that stands on its own, so 26-160 GPM rather than 4-6.

Empty state: with no blocks the section lists the store's collections automatically, alphabetically, up to Collections to show. That listing does not skip collections with no products, and Shopify's automatic Home page collection can appear in it. Add explicit Collection blocks to control what shows. When nothing resolves at all the whole section, heading included, is absent from the storefront while staying visible in the editor.

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes. Blocks: none.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
CaptionemptyShort line above the heading.
HeadingFeatured productsHidden when blank.
IntroemptyOne line under the heading.
CollectionemptyEmpty falls back to every product in the store.
Products to show84 to 12.
Show view all linkonHidden anyway when the collection holds nothing.
Show vendoroffAdds the vendor line to each card.
Image frame ratioLandscape (4:3)Square, Portrait (4:5) or Landscape.

Empty state: a store with no products draws placeholder cards so the editor preview is never blank.

Note This row is a horizontal swipe track at every width, desktop included. It never wraps to a second row, so raising Products to show makes the row longer, not the page taller.

Testimonials

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes, with three empty Quote blocks. Blocks: up to 6 Quote blocks.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
CaptionOwnersShort line above the heading.
HeadingWhat owners reportHidden when blank.
IntroVerbatim, with the installation each one refers to.One line under the heading.

Quote block takes a Quote, a Name, a Details line (the particulars of the job, set in the data face under the name), and an optional Product link.

Empty state: a block shows nothing at all until the Quote field is filled in. A block with only a name and a product is invisible on the storefront, though the editor shows it with a note. With no completed quotes the section is absent from the storefront and present in the editor.

The column count follows the quote count: one quote reads as a paragraph, two and four take two columns, three and six take three, and five leaves one deliberately empty cell so the ruled table still closes. Below 750px the quotes become a swipe row.

Limit There are no star ratings and no field to enter one, and the section emits no review structured data. These quotes will never appear as ratings in search results. See What Splash never invents.

Quote request

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes. Blocks: none.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
ImageemptyFills the panel beside the text and is cropped to fit, so its height follows the copy. 1600 x 1200px recommended, subject centered.
HeadingCustom design and constructionThe section renders as soon as this has a value.
Taglinea two-sentence explanation of the quote flowThe body copy.
Button labelemptyNeeds a link as well before it appears.
Button linkemptyPoint it at your quote request page.
NoteNo obligation. Typical reply in 2 business days.Fine print under the button. 12 words maximum.

Empty state: the heading has a default, so a freshly added section shows the panel with that copy and a dashed empty image slot beside it. The button is the part that stays hidden until both its label and its link are set.

Why the theme has this flow at all: Why quote requests.

Certifications

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes, with four empty Mark blocks. Blocks: up to 8 Mark blocks.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
CaptionAuthorityShort line above the heading.
HeadingCertified, and published as evidenceLeave blank to show the marks on their own.
IntroemptyOne line under the heading.

Mark block takes an Image (SVG or PNG with a transparent background, shown at up to 48px tall), a Name, a Caption, a Reference number, a Show verified badge checkbox (off by default), and a Link.

Name

The credential itself, for example ISO 9001.

Caption

What the credential covers, not the number. Putting the number here as well prints it twice.

Reference number

The registration or standard number, set in the data face so a visitor can look it up.

Show verified badge

Prints the word Verified beside the number. Only turn it on for a credential you hold, and fill in the Link so a visitor can check it.

Empty state: a mark needs a name, a caption or a reference number before it appears. An uploaded logo on its own is treated as an unfinished block and skipped on the storefront. With no completed marks the section is absent from the storefront and visible in the editor.

Note Give the logo file alt text in Content > Files. The caption alone usually cannot name the mark for a screen reader.

Product page

Product

Placement: the product template. Cannot be placed in the header or footer groups. Preset: none. Blocks: no section-wide maximum, but most block types are limited to one.

One section setting:

Product information display

Tabs (the default) or Stacked. Tabs show one band at a time with a tab strip. Stacked shows every band down the page. A single band is always stacked, and both settings fall back to stacked when a visitor has JavaScript off.

The gallery is built in and has no blocks or settings of its own. Everything else is a block, and there are two places a block can land. Most draw in the buy column beside the gallery, in the order you arrange them. Three of them are bands: Full description, Specification table, and Shipping and returns. Those are collected and drawn full width below the gallery, in block order, wherever you put them in the list.

BlockLimitSettings and behaviour
Vendor1No settings.
Title1No settings.
SKU1No settings. Follows the selected variant.
Price1No settings. Prints Price on request on a quote-only product.
Variant picker1No settings. Draws swatches when the option is linked to a Shopify colour metaobject.
Buy buttons1Four checkboxes: dynamic checkout buttons, gift card recipient form, back-in-stock request when sold out, sticky buy bar. All on by default.
Pickup availability1No settings. Needs local pickup enabled in Shopify.
Spec bars1Three rows, each with a Row metafield, a Row label, a Scale (the highest value across products of this kind) and an Emphasis of Accent or Neutral.
Rating1No settings. Prints nothing unless both rating metafields are named in Theme settings and the product carries values in them.
Package contents1Heading (default Package includes), Metafield (default specs.package), Open by default. Each line of the metafield becomes one row.
Add-ons1Heading (default You may need), up to 4 Products, Show description line, Open by default (on).
Description1One field, Short description metafield, default custom.short_description. When that metafield holds a value it replaces the buy box excerpt entirely. Leave blank to keep the automatic excerpt.
Full description1A band. Tab label (default Overview), Caption, Heading (default About this product). While it is present the buy box description shows only its first paragraph. The band stays hidden when the description is one paragraph of 40 words or fewer.
Specification table1A band. Tab label, Caption, Heading, two group headings, Rows in the first group (1 to 7, default 4), then 8 pairs of Row metafield and Row label.
Shipping and returns1A band. Tab label, Caption (default Terms), Heading. Its content comes from Theme settings, not from here.
Custom LiquidnoneOne Liquid code field.
App blocknoneWhatever the installed app provides.

Every Row metafield field takes a namespace and key together, such as specs.flow_rate. Leave the matching Row label blank and the theme names the row from the key itself, so specs.flow_rate reads as Flow rate.

Rows are dropped, not blanked. A product that carries no value for a configured row does not print that row, and a value that is nothing but a dash is treated as no value and dropped too. When no row resolves at all, the Specification table band disappears rather than printing an empty table under a heading. A spec bar needs three things before it draws: a metafield, a Scale above zero, and a value on the product.

Setting the metafields up: Show your specifications. Choosing and ordering the blocks: Arrange the product page.

Product details

Placement: product templates only. Preset: yes, with a Description block set to open and a Specification table block. Blocks: up to 8.

This is a second, separate accordion of product information. It is not on the product template the theme ships, so you add it if you want it.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
CaptionemptyShort line above the heading.
HeadingProduct detailsClearing it keeps the heading for screen readers and drops it visually.
LayoutTabsTabs or Accordion. Tabs fall back to an accordion when scripts are off.

Four block types, each with an Open by default checkbox that opens the item in the accordion layout and selects it as the starting tab in the tabs layout:

Description (limit 1)

Heading, default Product description. Shows the description from the product's own admin page.

Specification table (limit 1)

Heading, default Specifications, then 8 pairs of Row metafield and Row label.

Metafield content

Heading, default Package includes, plus a Metafield. Multi-line text renders one line per row; rich text keeps its formatting.

Text

Heading and a rich text field. The same wording on every product.

Empty state: an item with no heading, or with nothing to show inside it, appears in the editor with a hint and never reaches the storefront. When no item is complete the whole section is absent.

Product recommendations

Placement: product templates only. Preset: none. Blocks: none.

Two of these ship on the product template, one set to Complementary and one to Related, each showing 4 products.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
HeadingemptyBlank falls back to Related products or Pairs with, depending on the type.
Recommendation typeRelatedRelated or Complementary. Complementary uses the pairings you set in Shopify's Search & Discovery app.
Products to show42 to 8.

Empty state: the section prints nothing when Shopify returns no recommendations, and nothing at all when the visitor has JavaScript off. Complementary recommendations return nothing until you have set pairings.

Requires Complementary products are configured in Shopify's Search & Discovery app, not in the theme editor.

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes, with Vendor, Title, SKU, Price, Description and Buy buttons. Blocks: no maximum, most limited to one.

A single product with its buy form, for putting one item on a page that is not the product page.

Caption

Heading

Which product to show.

Blocks: Vendor, Title, SKU, Price, Description and Buy buttons, each limited to one, plus Custom Liquid and app blocks. Buy buttons carries one checkbox, Show dynamic checkout buttons, on by default.

Collection, search and the collections list

Collection

Placement: the collection template. Preset: none. Blocks: none.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Products per page2412 to 36, in steps of 4.
Columns on mobile11 or 2. Applies below 750px only. At 2 the price and the stock badge stack instead of sharing a line.
Image frame ratioLandscape (4:3)Square, Portrait (4:5) or Landscape.
Show vendoroffAdds the vendor line to each card.
Show filter group namesoffAdds the group name to each applied filter, so a value like 10 reads as Width: 10.

Empty state: a filter combination that matches nothing prints No products match these filters.

Requires The filter rail comes from Shopify's Search & Discovery app. With no filters configured there, the rail does not appear. See Collection and search pages.

Placement: the search template. Preset: none. Blocks: none.

The same four settings as Collection, minus the mobile column count: Results per page (default 24, 12 to 36), Image frame ratio (default Landscape 4:3), Show vendor (off), Show filter group names (off).

Collections grid

Placement: the collections list template. Preset: none. Blocks: none.

Menu

Optional. Lists exactly the collections in this link list, in its order. Leave empty to list every collection that has products.

Collections per page

Default 16, 8 to 24 in steps of 4.

Empty state: with nothing to list, the page prints No collections to show yet. Collections appear here once they hold at least one product.

Note By default this page skips collections with no products, so an empty collection will not appear even though it exists. Point the Menu setting at a link list to control the listing exactly.

Content templates

Blog

Placement: the blog template. Preset: none. Blocks: none.

Two settings: Articles per page (default 12, 6 to 24 in steps of 3) and Show author (on).

Empty state: a blog with nothing published prints No articles have been published to this blog yet.

Article

Placement: the article template. Preset: none. Blocks: up to 4 Product blocks.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Show authoronThe byline under the title.
Show sharing linksonThe row at the foot of the article. Turning this off hides all six.
FacebookonOne checkbox per network.
XonOpens X's own share window.
PinterestonShown only on articles that have a featured image.
LinkedInoffOff by default. Turn it on for trade and specification writing.
EmailonOpens the reader's mail client with the title and link filled in.
Copy linkonShown only in browsers that allow a page to write to the clipboard.

Product block holds one Product picker. Blocks draw as a Products in this article card in the article sidebar, under the automatic table of contents. A block with no product selected is skipped.

See Blog and content pages.

Page

Placement: the page template. Preset: none. Blocks: none. Settings: none.

It draws the breadcrumb, the page title and the page content from Shopify's page editor. Everything on a page is edited in Content > Pages, not here. To add sections to one page and not another, create an alternate page template in the editor.

Cart

Placement: the cart template. Preset: none. Blocks: none.

Two settings: Show dynamic checkout buttons (on) and Show cart note field (on).

Empty state: an empty cart prints Your cart is empty. with a way back to the catalog.

Not found

Placement: the 404 template. Preset: none. Blocks: none. Settings: none.

The status code, an explanation, a link back to the catalog and a search form. Change the wording in Content > Themes > Edit default theme content.

Password

Placement: the password template. Preset: none. Blocks: none. Settings: none.

The only template that renders without the header and footer. It shows your logo, the message you write in Online Store > Preferences, and the password form.

Gift card

The gift card page has no sections at all and nothing to edit in the theme editor. It renders the balance, the code, a scannable QR code, an Apple Wallet pass and a print action.

Sections you can add to any template

FAQ

Placement: any template. Not available in the header, footer or FAQ section groups. Preset: yes, with three empty Question blocks. Blocks: up to 20 Question blocks.

Use this for one set of questions on one template. For a set that follows a rule across many pages, use the FAQ set section in the FAQ group below.

Send these questions to search engines

On by default. Leave it on for one FAQ section per page and off for the rest, so a page never sends two competing sets.

Question block takes Show this question (on, so you can hide one without deleting it), a Question and a rich text Answer.

Empty state: a question needs both a question and an answer before it appears. Incomplete ones show in the editor with a note. With no complete question the section is absent from the storefront.

Custom Liquid

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes. Blocks: none.

One setting, Liquid code, for app snippets and other code. Whatever you paste renders in place.

Form builder

Placement: any template or section group. Preset: yes, with a Name, an Email and a Paragraph text field. Blocks: up to 50.

This is the section behind both the contact page and the quote request page. Two page templates ship using it, so a page you assign to either arrives with a form already built.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
CaptionemptyShort line above the form heading.
Form headingemptySits on the form card itself.

Page captionemptyA short line above the page title.
Button labelSend messageThe submit button.

Fourteen block types. Eleven are form fields: Text, Email, Phone, Number, Date, Paragraph text, Dropdown, Multiple choice, Checkboxes, Checkbox and Section break. Every one of them carries a Show when this field and Has one of these answers pair for conditional visibility. Three are not fields at all and draw in the column beside the form regardless of where you drag them: Contact method, Opening hours and Callout.

Field settings are documented one type at a time in the Form field reference. The conditional pair has its own page, Conditional form fields. To build a form from scratch, start at Build the quote request form.

Note A field's Label is its identity. Renaming one breaks any condition that names the old label, and changes the column heading in the notification email.

The global FAQ group

A section group that renders below the main content of every page. It exists so one FAQ set can follow a rule across many pages instead of being pasted into each template.

FAQ set

Placement: the FAQ group only. Preset: yes, with three empty Question blocks. Blocks: up to 20 Question blocks, identical to the FAQ section's.

The theme ships three sets in this group: one for the home page, one for product pages excluding the gift card, and one limited to the quote request page.

Send these questions to search enginesonLeave on for one set per page and off for the rest.

On an article, the blog's handle matches as well as the article's. Neither handle field has any effect on the home page, which is matched by the checkbox alone.

Empty state: on a page the set does not target, the editor still shows it with the note This set is not shown on this page. Choose where it appears in the section settings. so you can keep editing it from anywhere. That note never reaches a shopper.

Worked examples in Add FAQs.

Placement: footer group. Preset: none. Blocks: none.

Show store addressonUses the address from your store settings.
Show payment iconsonDraws the methods your store actually accepts. Nothing appears while the store is on a test gateway.

The social row in the brand column is not set here. A network appears when you fill in its URL under Theme settings > SEO and structured data > Social profiles, and disappears when you empty it. There is no checkbox.

Cart drawer

Placement: placed on every page by the layout, so it cannot be moved or removed. Preset: none. Settings: none. Blocks: none.

The side cart the header cart icon opens. It is controlled entirely by one global setting, Cart type under Theme settings. Set that to Page and the drawer renders nothing at all, and every cart link goes to the cart page instead. Without JavaScript, every entry point falls back to the cart page too.

Quick view

Placement: footer group. Preset: none. Settings: none. Blocks: none.

The dialog that opens from a Quick view control on a product card, in any grid on any template. It lives in the footer group so it is present everywhere a card can appear. It has no appearance of its own and nothing to configure. With scripting off, the control is an ordinary link and the shopper lands on the product page.

Sections that never appear in the editor

Two sections exist in the theme and are never shown in the section list, because they are not placed on any template. You do not need to do anything with them.

Predictive search

Draws the live results inside the header's search panel as a shopper types.

Quick view content

Draws the product inside the Quick view dialog once it is opened.
